ADL sat down with leaders at Minnieville Elementary School to learn about how they are implementing No Place for HateĀ®.
1.) Why did your school decide to participate in No Place for Hate?
It is a great opportunity for students to receive the lessons and gain more knowledge about their identities and the students they share a classroom with.
2.) How has the decision to participate in No Place for Hate impacted your school environment?
We tend to leave our activities, pertaining to the lessons, on the bulletin boards throughout the year in a location where all students pass by. It gives them a reminder of the lessons we did, and it also lets them see the other ideas that other classes may have had that were different. It also brings more conversations into the building, which allows for great discussions between the students and staff.
3.) How do you engage students in leadership roles?
We have a house system in place at our school and we also have opportunities in each classroom to participate in voice and choice. This builds their character and their ability to lead and make decisions.
4.) What advice would you give to other schools interested in pursuing No Place for Hate?
Do it! It is about building a stronger sense of community in such a diverse world. I am impressed with the lessons provided by ADL. The lessons are engaging and thought provoking which is exactly what is needed when you work in such a diverse community!
